What is The Most Hated Man on the Internet about?

Hunter Moore prided himself on being a “professional life ruiner” by cultivating a passionate and misogynistic fanbase that called themselves “The Family.” His rise to infamy began with the creation of revenge porn hub IsAnyoneUp.com that allowed users to submit nude photos of men and women, typically without their knowledge or consent. The Most Hated Man on the Internet dissects Moore’s rise and the mother who went above and beyond to hold him responsible for all the pain he caused.

Directed by Rob Miller and executive produced by Alex Marengo, this three-part documentary series highlights Charlotte Law’s journey to bring Moore to justice. The project also features exclusive and intimate interviews with other victims of Moore’s and the website, including people who were close to Moore and once part of his inner circle.

Perhaps one of the most shocking revelations about this series is the fact that there still is no federal legislation regarding revenge porn. Charlotte helped pass laws against intimate image abuse in 48 American states, but there is still no U.S. federal law against it.

Part of this power of this documentary series is in the way it gives power back to many of Moore’s victims. And yes, while Moore is at the epicenter of this entire debacle, he’s far from the only person on the internet who is complicit.

Those who were giddily logging onto IsAnyoneUp day after day to humiliate, chastise and debase people who had their photos stolen and uploaded were just as culpable for the damage and I think most of us know just how dark the internet can be. This era in the early 2010s has only given rise to more insidious forms of abuse and degradation.

The Most Hated Man on the Internet is exploring a very specific point in our collective culture, but there are plenty of other “Hunter Moore” types out there.
