What is Uncle from Another World about?

An anime series titled Uncle from Another World is set to arrive on Netflix on July 20, and we’ve shared all the important details about the show to prepare you for its release!

Uncle from Another World is an anime adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Hotondo Shindeiru. It was made by Atelier Pontdarc animation studio, with Shigeki Kawai signed on as director and Kenta Ihara as scriptwriter.

The voice cast includes some names you’re probably familiar with, such as Jun Fukuyama, Takehito Koyasu, Mikako Komatsu, Haruka Tomatsu,  Aoi Yūki,  Aki Toyosaki, Kenichi Suzumura, Nobuhiko Okamoto, and Hisako Kanemoto.

Uncle from Another World synopsis

The story follows a college student named Takafumi Takaoka, who picks up his middle-aged uncle from the hospital when he awakens from a 17-year coma after being hit by a truck. Soon, Takafumi realizes that something isn’t quite right with his uncle when he starts speaking an unrecognizable language and has the ability to use magic spells. Oh, and he also has a great love for video games.

"​Seventeen years ago, Takafumi’s uncle fell into a coma, but now he’s back like a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and, while comatose, he was actually transported to another world as some heroic guardian! Now, not only does Takafumi have to room with an uncle who is literally magical, he also has to catch the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes…and the traumatic outcome of the ’90s console war!"

Uncle from Another World was given an age rating of TV-MA, meaning it’s meant to be watched by mature audiences only. It was mainly given this age rating because of the nudity shown in the series. Overall, the anime may not be suitable for ages 17 and under.
