After zooming through all eight episodes of Netflix’s live-action Resident Evil series, you might be curious as to whether or not we are getting Resident Evil season 2.
Resident Evil is a massively popular horror franchise around the world. It has international fame, whether it be from the games, movies or merchandise, most people know what the series is even if they haven’t seen the movies or played the games. Based on that fact alone, it seems like there is a good chance the live-action show will get a lot of views, if only out of curiosity.
There have been several animated Resident Evil films and shows, but this is the first live-action series in the universe. The other live-action content has been the films.
Netflix will likely give the show at least one more season, although I’m personally hoping for many more, but I’ll take what I can get.
Is Netflix Resident Evil season 2 happening?
Resident Evil has not yet been canceled or renewed. Sometimes Netflix will order very early renewals even before a show airs, if they anticipate it being popular. But Resident Evil has not bee prematurely renewed or canceled. The good news is that there is plenty of time for the show to premiere and hopefully do extremely well on the service to make a long-term investment across multiple seasons worth it.
Genre fare on Netflix has been mostly hit or miss but some of the streaming service’s biggest shows are horror or fantasy. The Witcher is probably the most comparable since it is also a very popular franchise based on books and acclaimed video games (although the Netflix series is based on the books, not the games). Stranger Things is also Netflix’s biggest show and fans between that and Resident Evil should overlap, so I’m hopeful for Resident Evil‘s future.
So far, we don’t have confirmation one way or another, but stay tuned to Netflix Life for updates.
The good news is, Dabb has a plan for the series with a beginning, middle and end mapped out. He told TVLine, “Whether that’s two seasons or three seasons or four seasons or five seasons, we’ll let the audience dictate to us.”
What could Resident Evil season 2 be about?
Spoilers ahead for Resident Evil season 1
The end of the first season ends on several significant cliffhangers. In 2022, Billie and Jade leave New Raccoon City with Bert. Jade has the name and address of Ada Wong, so we can assume she will be headed for Japan. But will Billie go with her? Based on how things are between them in 2036, it doesn’t seem likely. There’s also the fact that Evelyn’s secret project has escaped, likely causing the eventual virus outbreak.
Speaking of 2036, the season ends with Arjun’s fate left up in the air, Jade shot and Billie making off with Jade’s daughter Bea. Her storyline will obviously be about her trying to get her daughter back.
While speaking with TVLine, Dabb also teased more elements from the games coming into play as the story continues, saying, “I will say that the deeper we get into it, the more story we’re finding as we bring in more elements from the games and expand these worlds and these characters.”
Additionally, he said:
"“We made the choice [in Season 1] to just touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the game lore. If we’re lucky enough to go into Season 2 and beyond, you’ll start to see a lot more game elements coming into the show.”"
Even if we don’t necessarily see everything in the show, Dabb added that what happens in the game is still real in this world and form the backstory of the show.
"“All the games that have come out today, [from] the first game to Village, are the backstory of our show. So Raccoon City got nuked. In Eastern Europe, there was a giant vampire lady [aka Lady Dimitrescu]. That’s all in our world.”"
