There are many monsters, zombies and other things that go bump in the night in the Resident Evil series on Netflix (and the franchise overall), but one of the most mysterious entities in the series isn’t introduced until the eighth episode, or the season finale.

Spoilers ahead for Resident Evil

In the beginning of Netflix Resident Evil episode 8, Evelyn invites Bert into a special room where she shows him the “special project” that he’ll be working on. Behind a glass window we see a large specimen tank filled with water and inside is a man who appears to be slowly mutating. We do not learn much else about this being, but fans of the games might recognize him.

Resident Evil: What is the monster Evelyn is keeping in a specimen tank?

Based on the brief look we get at the creature, I think it might be William Birkin. Birkin is mentioned once earlier in the season by Albert Wesker and though we don’t ever meet him, it’s possible this is Birkin during the early stages of his mutation from the Golgotha Virus, or the G-Virus, which he created in the games. The show zooms in on the creatures hands, with long nails growing from the fingertips, and that looks most like Birkin’s monster design to me.

I might be wrong about this as I admit I’m a casual player of the games and haven’t had the chance to play them all yet. My first thoughts were Tyrant or Nemesis, but that doesn’t make as much sense.

Resident Evil only introduces the T-Virus this season, but there are many hints toward the existence of the G-Virus. For starters, Lisa Trevor is introduced via secret online documents and the video that Jade and Billie find in episode 5. Lisa became a victim of human testing and the G-Virus in the games.

Plus, the fact Wesker even mentioned Birkin feels like a significant clue toward the thing in the tank. Either way, I’m guessing we’ll find out in season 2 (fingers crossed for renewal) since the creature escapes from its tank at the end of the finale.
