The long process of finding the actress who would step into Madonna’s intimidating shoes for the upcoming film about her life has seemingly reached its conclusion. Julia Garner, the Emmy-winning star of Netflix’s Ozark and Inventing Anna, has been crowned as the material girl for the Madonna biopic.

Variety reported on June 7 that Julia Garner had been offered the leading role in the much talked about Madonna biopic, which saw the likes of Florence Pugh and Euphoria’s Alexa Demi in the running to bring the Queen of Pop’s early days to life on the big screen.

As Variety notes, Garner and her team are “considering and expected to accept the offer,” which appears to be industry speak for contract and scheduling negotiations. After the alleged “boot camp” the frontrunners went through to prepare for the audition, it seems unlikely the Emmy winner would pass on the chance to play the global icon.

Even though the Madonna biopic won’t be a Netflix original movie, the Netflix star looks to make a major leap to the big screen in what will for sure be one of the most anticipated new movies in the coming years. Here’s what Julia Garner’s latest role will entail.

Julia Garner lands Madonna biopic role

The as-yet-untitled film centering on Madonna’s rise to stardom in the 1980s will be directed by the singer, dancer, and trendsetter herself, with Amy Pascal producing the film for Universal Pictures. Julia Garner’s addition is the latest win for the developing film.

While Garner’s (potential) casting shows good faith for the movie, Universal has not announced a production timeframe or any other additional casting details. We do know, however, that Garner landing the offer means she proved herself not only as an actress but also as a singer and dancer throughout the “grueling” audition process.

Of course, Garner last appeared on Netflix in the fourth and final season of Ozark as the fan-favorite character Ruth Langmore, as well as the Shonda Rhimes-produced limited series Inventing Anna. Both series are among the most-watched and critically acclaimed titles on Netflix of 2022.
