Stranger Things season 4 part 1 has finally arrived, and while fans around the world are celebrating the release of new episodes, it’s not good times all around for some of our favorite characters.

When we last left the Hawkins gang in Stranger Things season 3, the Byers family and Eleven moved away from the “cursed” Indiana town in favor of a new start in California. Unfortunately, that new start hasn’t been so easy for everyone.

Although Eleven tries to put on a brave face in her letters to Mike, telling him that she’s made a ton of new friends and she’s loving her new life on the West Coast, she’s dealing with some pretty rough bullying in reality.

But does this intense bullying lead to a shocking arrest? Here’s who gets arrested in Stranger Things season 4, why they were arrested, and what happens in the fallout.

Warning: Spoilers from Stranger Things season 4 part 1 ahead!

Why was Eleven arrested in Stranger Things season 4 part 1?

In Stranger Things season 4 episode 3, Eleven gets arrested for attacking her bully during a trip to the Rink-O-Mania with Mike and Will in episode 2. But let’s rewind and unpack exactly why Eleven was forced into physical retaliation that had her cuffed in the back of a cop car.

The beginning of the season sets the scene for Angela’s ruthless bullying of Eleven. She and her friends pile on Eleven, who goes by Jane at her new school, for no particular reason. All she want is to make friends and be nice to people, but they are just plain mean.

Eleven takes Mike to the rollerskating rink, though it’s based on the premise that she’s friends with Angela and she goes there all the time for parties, which confuses Will. At the Rink-O-Mania, Angela pulls Eleven to the center of the rink to tease her once again.

This time, Angela and her friends are especially horrible, and it’s difficult to watch. (Millie Bobby Brown spoke about Eleven’s bullying storyline triggering her past real-life experiences with bullying.) They throw a chocolate milkshake on Eleven like an episode of Glee, and it’s the final straw.

Eleven skates off the rink crying and hides in a closet, where she sees her bullies watching back the video they shot and laughing. Still without her powers to help her, Eleven emerges from the closet and demands an apology. But when she doesn’t get it, she whacks Angela in the face with a rollerskate. If we’re being real, Angela deserved kinda deserved it — not the violence, but the karma.

But because Angela ends up concussed, Eleven gets arrested the next day. The cops question her, though that doesn’t make her look super innocent, and they haul her off to a juvenile detention center to the distress of Mike, Will, and Jonathan. But little do they know at the time, Dr. Owens swoops in to “save” Eleven from serving her time.
