Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever follows a young teen named Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) as she struggles to navigate life after the sudden death of her father. But then like every other teenager, Devi has to also deal with typical teenage problems like social status, friendships, and young love. There are so many reasons to watch this teen series, but the diverse cast, the tackling of a lot of important issues, and the South Asian representation are among the top reasons. It’s also enjoyable to watch the awkwardness of Devi and her close friends as they experience romantic feelings for the first time. Overall, Never Have I Ever is very relatable and you’ll be hooked by the first episode.

Ginny and Georgia

Ginny and Georgia follows a single mom named Georgia and her two kids, Ginny and Austin, as they relocate to an affluent New England town for a fresh start in life. But 15-year-old Ginny seems to be the least excited about the move because she’s tired of being uprooted once she starts to get used to a place. In the first season, we see Ginny experience her first relationship, which eventually leads to a love triangle, her first sexual encounter, peer pressure, and many other things most teenagers experience growing up. Fortunately, the story isn’t done because Ginny and Georgia seasons 3 and 4 have already been confirmed and will be coming to Netflix in the future.

On My Block

On My Block is one of the best teen series on the streamer. The story follows a group of street-smart childhood friends as they navigate high school in the fictional Los Angeles neighborhood Freeridge. Along the way, the group of friends finds their lifelong friendship tested by gang violence, new romances, and new adventures. On My Block is full of teen drama, angst, and romance which many of us could relate to at one point in our lives.

Degrassi: Next Class

Degrassi: Next Class could never compete with Degrassi: The Next Generation, but it did just enough. Like its source material, the show focuses on a group of teenagers attending the fictional Degrassi Community School. Viewers watch the teenagers face various issues of teenage life like sexuality, teen pregnancy, racism, mental illness, dysfunctional families, etc. Although there are some cringeworthy moments throughout the series, the life lessons taught in each episode make you come back for more.

Everything Sucks!

I personally really enjoyed watching Everything Sucks! Sadly, the streamer didn’t see the show’s potential and canceled it two months after its premiere. What I liked most about the teen series is that it provided an accurate depiction of how teenage life was in the ’90s. Even though the show is set in the ’90s, the issues the teenagers faced are still applicable today.

The story follows a group of teen misfits a part of the AV club at their high school who attempt to make a movie together while dealing with the typical ups and downs of teenage life. We see the teens deal with puberty, sexuality, relationships, and first crushes and kisses. It’s a feel-good series and we recommend giving it a watch when you get the chance.

XO, Kitty - Netflix shows

XO, Kitty

When XO, Kitty was released on Netflix in May 2023, it was a breath of fresh air. We hadn’t had any new queer content on the streaming platform in a while. And luckily, we didn’t have to worry about the show being canceled because tons of people tuned in and watched the first season. Due to high viewership, the teen series was renewed for a second season a month after its premiere.

XO, Kitty is a spin-off to the To All the Boys film series. It follows teen love guru Kitty Song Covey as she travels across the globe to South Korea to be reunited with her long-distance boyfriend and to learn more about her late mother’s past. We don’t want to spoil too much about the show, but we will tell you that Kitty learns “something new” about herself when it comes to her romantic life in the first season. She also becomes close friends with a queer character and we get to see his love story unfold.

XO, Kitty is such a great feel-good series that’s easy to binge-watch. So we strongly recommend checking it out on Netflix.

Young Royals

If you haven’t watched Young Royals yet, what are you waiting on? There are two seasons currently streaming on Netflix, with a third and final season expected to be released in fall 2023.

It’s a Swedish teen drama following the fictional Prince Wilhelm of Sweden as he adjusts to life at the prestigious boarding school, Hillerska. While there, he meets Simon Eriksson, a non-boarding student with an exceptional singing voice. They grow close and eventually enter into a secret relationship.

What’s so great about Young Royals is that it shows a healthy representation of queer relationships. This isn’t something we typically see in TV shows. It also has just the right amount of romance and suspense. Overall, this isn’t a show you want to miss out on. So get your snacks and drink of choice ready, and start watching Young Royals on Netflix!
