Hollywood’s reboot era is still going strong as Spy Kids becomes the latest classic to be greenlit for a reimagination for a new generation.

The hit family action adventure comedy was the talk of the playground when the film debuted in 2001. Every child wanted to be either Carmen or Juni Cortez and hoped to discover their parents were also international spies, too.

The movie, created and directed by Robert Rodriguez, paired the coolness of action films with the warmhearted, coming-of-age family drama kids movies tend to champion. Its success led to a franchise that’s spawned three more movies and a Netflix original animated series.

Now magic is attempting to be sparked again 21 years after the first movie arrived on the scene.

The Spy Kids reboot is set to reimagine the franchise for Netflix

Deadline reports that Rodriguez will write and direct the new Spy Kids movie. Unlike 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, the reboot won’t be a product of the story that came before with all new characters. Instead we’ll be introduced to an entirely new family and origin story for how these kids become spies.

We expect there will be allusions to the previous movies and perhaps there may be cameos from the stars of the original like Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Danny Trejo, and more. Only time will tell but we’re excited to see where Rodriguez directs the Spy Kids franchise for Netflix.

The Spy Kids movies aren’t on the platform, but the spin-off animated series Spy Kids: Mission Critical is available to stream. Also, Rodriguez’ first movie for Netflix, We Can Be Heroes, is a superhero family flick that kids may enjoy. Stay tuned to Netflix Life for more news and coverage!
