Award-winning filmmaker Alison Klayman returns with Abercrombie & Fitch doc coming in April
By Mads Lennon
Acclaimed filmmaker and journalist Alison Klayman is back with another gripping documentary, this time about the lifestyle retailer Abercrombie & Fitch and the company’s dramatic rise and fall. Her latest film, White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, will be released on Netflix in April 2022.
Klayman is best known for her award-winning documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, but she has also directed several other documentaries, such as the 2018 film Take Your Pills at Netflix. She recently directed Jagged, a documentary about musician Alanis Morissette. Her other projects include The Brink, 11/8/16 and The 100 Years Show.
We don’t have much information about White Hot just yet, as Netflix only officially announced the film after releasing the official list of April 2022 offerings. But it is public knowledge that Abercrombie & Fitch was very popular in the 90s before legal issues and controversy caused the brand some serious trouble.
The company was previously accused of discriminatory practices and various customer service issues. At one point, Abercrombie & Fitch even sued American Eagle, claiming the competing clothing store had copied some of its designs. Ultimately, the court ruled in American Eagle’s favor.
Of course, the documentary will go into much more detail on the brand. It’s not clear what aspects it will explore since we don’t have a trailer yet, but the Netflix logline says the film will explore “A&F’s pop culture reign in the late 90s and early 2000s and how it thrived on exclusion.”
When does Alison Klayman’s Abercrombie & Fitch documentary release on Netflix?
This scandalous and investigative new documentary film will be released on Netflix April 19. If you are interested in watching the movie, make sure you set a reminder from your Netflix account to get notified when it becomes available.

Here is the official synopsis from Netflix for the upcoming Alison Klayman-directed documentary:
"Abercrombie & Fitch conquered malls in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s with gorgeous models, pulsing dance beats and a fierce scent. But while the brand was running white hot, its popular “all-American” image began burning out as controversy came to light surrounding its exclusionary marketing and discriminatory hiring."
