Women in horror: Rose from Black Summer
Rose is a complicated character on Black Summer, one who regularly alternates between ruthless decision-making and doing whatever possible to be a loving mother. She has divided the fandom more than once between those who think she’s a villain and those who think she’s one of the smarter characters.
Throughout two seasons of the show, Jaime King does a great job in her portrayal of Rose and her intensity. She’s not afraid to leave people behind if it means protecting her daughter and staying alive.
Women in horror: Lisa Nova from Brand New Cherry Flavor
Brand New Cherry Flavor is one of Netflix’s crazier horror shows. Based on the novel of the same name by Todd Grimson, this series goes where no show has ever gone before. At the center of all the insanity is Lisa Nova, played by Rosa Salazar.
We also can’t count on Boro, played by Catherine Keener, as she’s another compelling part of this story. Lisa and Boro go head-to-head throughout the season and it’s really fun to watch these two try to outsmart the other. But a significant part of this show’s appeal, besides the oddities, is Salazar’s excellent performance as Lisa. She creates a character that’s impossible to forget.
