Human Resources episode 3, “Bad Mummies”

Human Resources episode 3 introduces a new creature into the world of Big Mouth and its spinoff: the Need Demon. We first meet Becca’s baby’s Need Demon, who is thriving and extremely demanding. We all know how needy babies are and Becca’s child is no exception. The constant feedings, diaper changes and sleepless nights are running the new mom ragged. No mention of Barry in this episode which makes me wonder why he’s not pitching in to help Becca more often.

While the baby’s Need Demon takes over, Becca’s own Need Demon has shriveled up to a mere wisp capable of blowing away if someone so much as sneezes. Emmy spends most of this episode with Becca’s Need Demon, who helps her see a different side of Becca. Thus far, Emmy and Becca haven’t been getting along and Emmy straight-up tells Rochelle and Walter she hates her client. She can’t even glow for her, which is a big deal for a Lovebug!

But by the episode’s end, Emmy comes around to Becca, realizing that being a new mom is really hard and it’s understandable why she’s feeling so angry and frustrated. She even manages to glow for her.

Apart from Becca, we learn more about the complex world of Shame Wizards. The “Shame Wizard” from Big Mouth, voiced by David Thewlis, is back in Human Resources and we finally learn his name: Lionel. Lionel has a twisted relationship with his mom, Rita (Helen Mirren), who is a superstar in the Shame Wizard world thanks to her books and Ted Talk-esque lectures at Notre Shame and SHAMEx.

Lionel is desperate for his mother’s approval since she hardly gives him the time of day. He doesn’t even have her home address and all his emails to her are sent straight to spam. It’s not exactly the most loving of relationships. Harvesting Becca’s shame tears isn’t enough to impress Rita because she’s constantly preoccupied with Kitty Dukakis the Depression Kitty (Maria Bramford).

Come to find out, the reason for that is because Rita and Kitty have been involved with each other for centuries—literally, a flashback shows them having sex during the Titanic, JFK’s assassination and even Pompeii! There’s also the weird incestual undertones of Lionel and Rita’s relationship as Kitty points out: Lionel makes it seem like he wants to sleep with his own mom (“We’re Shame Wizards darling, of course he does”).

Rita finally throws her son a bone at the end of the episode and signs a copy of her book for him, promising that he’s her greatest shame and she’ll always be there to torment him. “Because you love me?” “No, because I’m your mummy.”

The other plot of this episode is a particularly silly, but hilarious, babysitting session for Connie. To prove to Maury that she’s capable of babysitting his pet genitalia, Connie agrees to watch over all the little penises for the day while Maury gets some work done. All she has to do is jerk them off every few hours and feed them Cool Ranch Doritos. Easy enough, right?

Well, no. Connie forgets to jerk them off and at exactly 3:00 p.m. the penises start banging and multiplying like rabbits and then turn into “real a**holes.” Literally.

It’s basically Gremlins rules but with an NSFW twist. At that point, they become completely out of control and Connie has to deliver a bag of about 500 a**holes to Maury. Luckily for Connie, Maury knows how to handle things and ships them off to Boston. “They seem to thrive there.”
