It’s finally time, Ozark fans! The first part of the highly-anticipated final season is out on Netflix and fans are really in for a wild ride. We’ve all been on the edge of our seat since that explosive season 3 ending, where Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) is killed by the cartel and Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) are coerced into working with Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) on a much closer basis.

But it’s not just Omar who the Byrdes have to deal with in Ozark season 4. Omar’s nephew Javi Elizonndro (Alfonso Herrera) is much more impulsive and careless with his decisions, thinking only of the short-term goal instead of the potential consequences. This is proven pretty early on in season 4 part 1.

Spoilers ahead for Ozark season 4 part 1.

The Byrdes have to deal with Omar and Javi throughout the first part of season 4, as the cartel wants to get Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) to stop running her heroin business. Marty and Wendy are also working closely with the FBI to cut a deal with Omar, something that, as you’d expect, doesn’t go as planned. After some convincing, Maya Miller (Jessica Frances Dukes) agrees to work with the Byrdes again in order to get closer to Omar, but she ends up fooling everyone in the end with her own operation.

Why is Omar Navarro arrested in Ozark season 4?

In the finale of Ozark season 4 part 1, Omar meets with the FBI to come to a deal. Although it’s not in Omar’s favor, he agrees to keep running the cartel for five more years, working closely with the feds until he’s granted immunity. At this point, the Byrdes are under the assumption they can stop working with the cartel and move on with their lives. They even have plans to move their family back to Chicago.

However, everything changes when Omar is arrested. Multiple cop cars pull up behind him as he’s getting ready to jet back to Mexico and he’s told to get on the ground. The group of police offers cuff him, led by Maya. When the Byrdes hear of the news, they’re confused and angry. It seems Maya went rogue from their plan, and now Marty and Wendy are screwed. Javi’s still out there, and he’s bound to cause some chaos and bloodshed if he doesn’t talk to Omar soon.

Wendy and Marty convince other FBI agents to let them speak to Omar while he’s in custody, and Omar is able to call Javi and explain.

Eventually, Javi cuts deal with the FBI, agreeing he’ll receive immunity after 10 years of running the cartel. He doesn’t shake on it, however, and there’s really no telling what’s actually going on inside his head.

Who kills Darlene and Wyatt in Ozark?

Arguably the most shocking scene in the Ozark season 4 part 1 finale is Darlene and Wyatt’s (Charlie Tahan) death. Though a number of people would likely want to see Darlene dead, it’s Javi who shoots and kills her. He’s still mad that she didn’t shut her business down like the cartel wanted, and he’s not in the talking mood when he shows up at her house.

Despite Darlene apologizing, Javi shoots and kills both her and Wyatt, literally saying “sorry, whoever you are” to Wyatt before pulling the trigger. It’s definitely unexpected, especially since Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) had just convinced Frank Cosgrove Jr. (John Bedford Lloyd) not to kill Darlene after she killed his father.

What happens to Ruth in Ozark season 4 part 1?

Ruth has the most heartbreaking storyline in Ozark season 4 part 1 by far. Though she plans to finally leave the Ozarks with Wyatt and start a new life, she’s disappointed when Wyatt tells her that he’s actually going to stay — and marry Darlene! Ruth is so sad for Wyatt and the toxic relationship he’s in, but she’s truly devastated when she finds the two dead.

She takes baby Zeke with her and frantically drives away, calling up Frank Jr. and freaking out on him for possibly being the culprit. However, he talks her down and promises her he didn’t kill anyone, which leads Ruth to head to the Byrdes. Though Wendy and Marty deny knowing who could’ve killed Darlene and Wyatt, Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) gives up Javi’s name.

Ozark season 4 part 1 ends with Ruth leaving the Byrdes, and we can assume she’s going after Javi. Of course, it’s extremely dangerous of her to go confront the acting leader of the cartel, but she’s too upset to care.

What’s next in Ozark season 4 part 2?

At this time, we don’t know for sure what’ll happen next. We don’t have a trailer for season 4 part 2 yet, but we can still speculate. Hopefully, Ruth won’t face a similar fate as Darlene and Wyatt, and it would be amazing if she could finally move out of the Ozarks. With this latest development in the part 1 finale, however, that might not be likely.

The Byrdes had plans to move back to Chicago, but it’s entirely possible they’ll have to remain in the Ozarks to keep working with Javi. As for Jonah, he wants to stay and keep working for Ruth, but Ruth has a whole other mission now. Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) should go to college, but she’ll likely keep working for her parents instead.

And most importantly, we’ll get to see what happens with the car wreck the Byrdes get into in the season 4 part 1 opening scene. Part 1 never circles back to that, and we’re wondering what that scene will mean for part 2. Will the Byrdes die? We’ll have to wait to find out.

We’ll keep you updated on everything we hear about Ozark season 4 part 2. In the meantime, stream all seven episodes of part 1 on Netflix right now!
