Seasons: 2

Created By: Ryan O’Connell

Starring: Ryan O’Connell, Jessica Hecht, Punam Patel, Marla Mindelle, Augustus Prew, Patrick Fabian

Leave it to Netflix to continue to push the limits of what television can do in the modern streaming era. While short-form shows aren’t a new innovation, they aren’t especially popular in a time when TV episodes are getting longer. Special debuted with eight episodes that run between 12 and 17 minutes and gave binge-watching a fresh yet no less funny new style.

Based on Ryan O’Connell’s memoir I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, O’Connell stars in Special as Ryan Hayes, an unpaid intern at the media company Eggwoke. After years of holding himself back because of his cerebral palsy, Ryan decides to break out of his shell and pursue the independent life he has always wanted for himself to varied results.

Special first premiered on Netflix in April 2019, well over two years prior to the release of its second and final season in May 2021 (which will expand into full half-hour episodes). The comedy series earned four Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and three acting nods for O’Connell, Jessica Hecht and Punam Patel. There’s something special about Special, namely its heart and humor.
