Overrated Netflix shows: The Chair

Seasons: 1

Created By: Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman

Starring: Sandra Oh, Jay Duplass, Bob Balaban, Nana Mensah, Everly Carganilla, David Morse, Holland Taylor, Ron Crawford, Jordan Tyson, and Bob Stephenson

Why It’s Overrated: I had such high hopes for The Chair. It’s Sandra Oh! How could I not have high hopes? And the premise, with her fighting against her old white colleagues and bosses, what a great idea! But it, unfortunately, fell so completely flat

It began going downhill with Jay Duplass’ character Bill Dobson. What a ridiculously awful character. I know people fall in love with problematic people all the time, but Sandra Oh’s character Ji-Yoon Kim, with this man child? It was painful to watch. And we never really got any justification for why they were together. They just were.

It continued to get worse when we were introduced to Ji-Yoon Kim’s daughter, Ju-Hee. What occurred was borderline child abuse. She left her alone A LOT or she let the man child babysit her. She rarely took her daughter’s issue seriously enough and it was played off as comic relief. It was bad, y’all.

I wrote about this show before it came out and gave it so much hype because, once again, Sandra Oh, but this is a show that never should have been made.

In 2021, no one really needs to watch a woman of color be mistreated and kicked out of her job. And then be replaced by an older white woman. We could just watch the news or go on Twitter if we wanted to see that. I hope whatever Sandra Oh does next is infinitely better than this. It won’t be a difficult task.
