Hello, Netflix Lifers, if you’re a fan of The CW then you know a new year means another CW show is set to make its leave from Netflix. Sometimes it’s more than one as the streamer’s deal to house the network’s original series lapses five years after a show’s final season lands on the platform.

With ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia now in the streaming business themselves, with Paramount+ and HBO Max respectively, there was no real incentive to strike up another deal. Hence why The CW’s parent companies didn’t re-up on their partnership with Netflix.

New CW shows go to HBO Max once their seasons finish airing. Series that made their debut prior to the end of the deal will remain on Netflix until that five-year clause is met, but it still feels like we’re simply waiting out the clock until The CW’s time on the streamer draws to a close.

In 2022, a fan favorite vampire series will be leaving the platform along with an ahistorical period drama centered on a famous queen. Here’s what we know about both shows from their episode count to when they’ll be departing Netflix.

Based on the books by L.J. Smith, this supernatural drama was must-watch TV when it shared the network’s throne with Gossip Girl.

Originally centered on Elena Gilbert, a human teen who’d recently lost her parents, the show spiraled into a series that explored dark romances, blood feuds between vampires and werewolves, the magic of witches, and the storied history of the Petrova dopplegangers.

The Vampire Diaries is the parent series of both The Originals and Legacies which are available to stream on Netflix as well.

The CW doesn’t often dabble in historical dramas but the network took a leap into the 1500s with Reign and they did it their way, of course. Back before the channel took up the “dare to defy” slogan, it was already doing so with its approach to Mary, Queen of Scots’ story.

The anachronistic period drama leaned hard into the scandalous nature of court. The show was basically CW’s try at the style of historical storytelling Showtime’s The Tudors embraced but with a TV-14 rating, a younger cast, and much less care for being historically accurate.

Political intrigue, romance, affairs, murder plots, and premonition fueled attempts at regicide made this show addictive television. Though it only ran four seasons, Reign was CW’s memorable take on the lives of royals born to lead.
