Star Trekone of the most influential shows in the world, is growing its sci-fi universe yet again! Alex Kurtzman’s “expanded Star Trek Universe” will continue with Star Trek: Prodigy, a CG animated show from Nickelodeon.

Star Trek: Prodigy will be the third animated series in the vast franchise after Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973) and Lower Decks (2020). This new series will be geared towards all audiences, unlike Lower Decks which is considered adult comedy. This all-new 2021 show is 3D animated with gorgeous colors and designs that will satisfy any Star Trek fan.

The show takes place in 2383 some time after the conclusion of the Star Trek: Voyager series, although some familiar characters will make appearances. The fresh cast features a “motley crew” of six alien scavengers who come across an abandoned Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar.

The Star Trek: Prodigy alien cast consists of some up-and-coming young actors: Brett Gray as Dal, Angus Imrie as Zero, and Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk. Voices you may recognize include but are not limited to Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as the Diviner, and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok. Kate Mulgrew will be reprising her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway (though this time as a hologram), and Robert Beltran will return as Commander Chakotay.

Is Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix?

Star Trek: Prodigy is a series created by Paramount, so it will be exclusively available on their streaming platform Paramount+. Two seasons have been confirmed and both will air on the Nickelodeon television channel after the streaming release on Oct. 28.

Netflix does, however, have other options when it comes to Star Trek content. You can currently stream all seven seasons of Star Trek: The New Generation and all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: The New Generation was the first Star Trek series to be released after the original show from the 1960’s. The show began around 10 years after Star Trek: The Original Series ended. As the title suggests, Star Trek: The New Generation follows a new crew aboard the Enterprise as they explore unknown worlds, led by Sir Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a spinoff from the first two shows, ran from 1993-1999 featuring another fresh cast of characters. The series is rated TV-14 unlike its predecessors, which are rated PG.

If you’re into all kinds of Star Trek content, the 2016 documentary For the Love of Spock is available to watch on Netflix. Adam Nimoy directs this film about his father and the impact he had on the world as the iconic character Spock.
