Avatar: The Last Airbender, the beloved Nickelodeon kids show, is getting a Netflix adaptation. The reaction to the upcoming live-action series has been mixed.

First because the film adaptation bombed making fans weary of yet another try at a live-action version of a modern classic. Then it was due to the changes the streamer plans to make that had the original show creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, bowing out as executive producers and showrunners. In their place, Albert Kim has stepped up to helm the series.

There’s been no confirmation on what changes the Netflix original series will make to the cartoon’s story, however, Konietzko did disclose in an Instagram post that he and DiMartino felt that Netflix was not holding up to their promise of supporting the creators’ vision.

While it’s expected that a live-action version of the show would bring changes to the source material, the creators’ departure from the Netflix adaptation has fans of the original wondering what changes, shifts, and expansions have been made to accommodate the direction of this adaptation that the creators didn’t agree with.

Konietzko states in the post that they didn’t leave because they felt all the ideas had to come from them or that they weren’t fully prepared to make this a collaborative effort. They left because he DiMartino felt unsupported and that the environment they were trying to develop the series in was negative despite the great team they were working with during their time as showrunners.

With filming set to run from November 2021 through April 2022 (according to What’s On Netflix though not confirmed by Netflix), we won’t have too long to wait to see what this new version has to offer or to see what changes were made that didn’t gel with the creators’ vision of the show.

Avatar: The Last Airbender release date

However, by not too long we don’t mean that the series will be dropping in summer 2022. It’ll likely be a year before we see Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender premiere on the steamer possibly in November or December.
