Who is Cody Briggs in Pretty Smart?

Pretty Smart premiered on Netflix on Oct. 8, and it’s already one of the funniest shows on Netflix. The sitcom might not be the buzziest new show of the year, but it will definitely tickle your funny bone with goofy gags and an excellent cast.

Emily Osment stars in Pretty Smart as Chelsea Morgan, a down-on-her-luck aspiring novelist, who moves in with her happy-go-lucky sister, Claire (Olivia Macklin), and her three equally easygoing but eccentric roommates Grant (Gregg Sulkin), Solana (Cinthya Carmona) and Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen).

Although Chelsea endures some struggles while attempting to assimilate into the group, she finds a fresh start and a new family of friends. She crushes on Grant, who happens to be Claire’s ex-boyfriend, but the relationship drama is nothing compared to the Cody Briggs drama.

Who is Cody Briggs in Pretty Smart?

When the gang gets their mail in episode 7, they discover they have received another piece of Cody Briggs’ mail. He was the previous tenant of their house, and they still receive some of his junk mail from time to time. Over time, Cody’s junk mail turned into a drinking game.

They would each take turns adding something extravagant and aspirational to the stories they would make up, all while taking a drink. Before long, the mysterious previous tenant turned into a rich bachelor, who drives a Ferrari and snorkels with his glamorous girlfriend Ramona.

Chelsea’s initiation into her first Cody Briggs night doesn’t go so well for her. On her first try to fabricate a story about Cody, she talks about dog cancer and it ruins the mood. Eager to impress later on, Chelsea tries to steam the new letter open but accidentally burns it to a crisp.

Obviously, she and Claire go on a “mail heist” to steal another piece of his mail, but they end up meeting the real Cody Briggs, who wasn’t the suave womanizer they had imagined. Grant, Solana and Jayden, too, wind up at Cody’s house thinking that they had thrown out the letter

Who plays Cody Briggs in Pretty Smart?

John Gemberling, who you’ve seen in Broad City and Netflix’s A Futile and Stupid Gesture, brings the paranoid shut-in Cody Briggs to life. The gang’s mission to swipe a junk letter from Cody’s home results in an emergency Cody Briggs game.

In true sitcom fashion, Chelsea and the roommates toss out their mail heist operation to help inspire Cody to go after his lost love Ramona. All of their past Cody Briggs nights prepared them for this weird, full circle moment. Not to mention, it brought Chelsea and Grant closer together.

Even though we would have preferred a slower burn on the Cody Briggs reveal, which could have been a gag to last for multiple seasons, Pretty Smart displayed the comedic strengths of its writing and showcased the off-the-charts chemistry of its main cast in the hilarious Cody Briggs episode.
