Midnight Mass is the new Netflix original horror series that everyone has been talking about during the buildup to Halloween.

The new series was just released on Friday, Sept. 24. Mike Flanagan created Midnight Mass. For those who don’t know, Flanagan is also behind The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, which are considered to be some of Netflix’s best horror shows to date.

If you’re not a big horror fan and are interested in finding out just how scary Midnight Mass is, you came to the right place!

You don’t have to worry about spoilers! We didn’t spoil anything about the series on Netflix.

Is Midnight Mass scary?

I always find this question tough to answer because what someone finds scary is so personal. We all find different things more terrifying than others.

But, yes, I think most people will find Midnight Mass scary, but not in the way that you’ve been scared by in TV shows or movies before. There are a few jump scares to get your adrenaline going, although not too many. There’s the normal horror movie and show stuff that we’ve all come to love.

Flanagan is so good with pacing and camera work in each scene. When mixed with your own expectations, it adds the perfect layer of suspense. The audience truly has no idea what’s going to happen next, and there’s something really scary about that.

I’m struggling to find any movie or TV show to actually compare Midnight Mass to, actually. Usually, it’s so easy to be like this movie is like this other movie, but not so with Midnight Mass. You can definitely feel some of the same Hill House and Bly Manor vibes at times, but it’s different. Those were both haunted house-type stories while this is most definitely not.

There are some very, very disturbing moments in Midnight Mass. Some of those scenes can be attributed to blood and gore, but it’s not those scenes that I find the most difficult to watch (through my fingers.)

The most terrifying part about the show is how it forces you to look at life, faith, and mortality through different lenses. There are so many well-written characters dealing with their own struggles, and we get to see them live with that pain throughout the series.

I guess that’s what I found to be the scariest part.

But, yes, Midnight Mass is scary, and it’s rated TV-MA.

Is Midnight Mass good?

Yes, it’s absolutely good! It moves a little slower than what I’m used to watching, but it is enthralling. You’ll be drawn in because of the mystery, but these characters and these performances are what will make you stay for all seven episodes and want more when you’re done.

Obviously, this show is not for everyone, but I think almost everyone will enjoy Midnight Mass. As you can see by the reviews, there’s no doubt this is one of the best Netflix shows of the year.
