The 2021 Emmy’s was an emotional rollercoaster. There were some amazing highs (Michaela Coel winning for Best Writing in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie being one of them) and some very low lows. One of those lows involved a win for The Queen’s Gambit but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The brilliant Netflix Original series about the chess prodigy, Beth Harmon, picked up two Emmy’s this year. One award was for Outstanding Directing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for Scott Frank and the other for Best Limited Series.

Side note: why Best Limited Series was the last category of the show is anyone’s guess.

Let’s start with one of the major lows of the award show and that was Scott Frank’s speech. The audacity to write a two-page speech when you know you don’t have a lot of time to speak is astonishing. To actually read the whole speech through two musical prompts telling you to wrap it up is possibly a level of entitlement and gall that we haven’t seen on an award show in at least a couple of years.

Hopefully, people who haven’t watched the show don’t look at that speech and let it skew whether they check out the show or not. I swear it’s worth watching despite this man’s ridiculousness.

And that brings us to the high. The Queen’s Gambit fully deserved its Best Limited Series win. It’s an extraordinary show about struggle, perseverance, and determination. It’s a show about a girl and then a woman showing everyone exactly what she can do. It doesn’t matter whether they believe in her or not.

The series was hyped all throughout last year for a reason and became so popular because of word of mouth. Hopefully, this win gets more people to watch it.

Thankfully, executive producer William Horberg, who accepted the award, kept Scott Frank well away from the microphone and the Emmys ended on a good note.

The Queen’s Gambit win for Best Limited Series also put Netflix at a whopping 44 Emmy wins total for 2021.
