Untold: Deal with the Devil is the newest installment of Netflix’s documentary anthology Untold. The docuseries focuses on a different athlete or notable event in sports history. In this episode, Christy Martin tells us in detail about her life, career and the adversity she faced in both.

If you’ve watched Untold: Deal with the Devil, you know how things go for world champion Christy Martin. Her rise to fame kicked off when she won a bloody match against Deirdre Gogarty on the undercard for headliner Mike Tyson in 1996.

Behind the scenes, Christy was struggling with her relationship with her husband, defining her sexuality, and substance abuse. Her story culminates to the attempt on her life in 2010, when ex-husband Jim Martin stabbed, shot, and left Christy for dead.

What happened Christy’s trainer in Untold: Deal with the Devil?

Jim Martin is currently serving a 25-year sentence in Orange County Jail, having been found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and manslaughter. He will be locked up until he’s 92 years old. Christy comments in a dark humor that she believes her manipulative abuser will live to see that age.

Jim Martin chuckles and scoffs throughout his interviews. At the end, he holds back tears when he laments what he could have had.

“It was my choice”, he says, at first seeming to reference the decision to kill his wife. He composes himself, stating was the one who took a chance on Christy Salters in the first place, so he is the real reason she’s a star. The satisfaction of being behind her success, forever entwined, is all he needs while rotting in jail. He seems to have no remorse or acknowledgement of the years of abuse he put his wife and trainee through.

Christy’s father, in tears for a different reason, goes stone faced. He says that if it were up to him, Jim Martin would never leave prison.

Mental recovery from an attempted murder

Christy Salters-Martin will always be in recovery from the attempt on her life. The first blow came six months after the incident, after she had returned to boxing. During the fight that was supposed to be her 50th win, she broke her hand and lost by default. She had a stroke during the surgery on her hand. Miraculously, this complication didn’t claim her life, either.

Nine years after the incident, she still has recurring nightmares of being chased by a murderous Jim in her grandmother’s house in Virginia. Even locked up, Christy’s ex-husband and trainer still has a hold on her.

Christy’s counselor told her while she will never truly get over the incident, she will figure out how to deal with it. “I’m gonna be okay. I am okay,” Christy says to the camera, and to herself. “I’m not gonna be okay, I am okay.”

Where is Christy Martin today?

Christy Salters has made a name for herself outside of Jim Martin’s shadow. She founded Christy’s Champs, a non-profit organization that helps fight against the cycle of domestic violence. In her other business, Christy Martin Promotions, the retired boxer follows in the footsteps of Don King and works outside of the ring to help shine a spotlight on athletes.

She is now happily married to ex-rival boxer Lisa Howelyne. The two reconnected after the 2010 attempted murder went viral, including the part where Christy was intending on leaving Jim for her childhood girlfriend. With her sexuality attached to every headline, Christy didn’t have the chance to come out for herself. However, happy endings do happen, as she found the love of her life in her long time rival. Jim claimed she’d lose everyone she cared about if she came out as gay — what happened was just the opposite.

“I just hope I can make her as happy as she makes me,” Christy says with a smile.

She was recently elected as the first woman inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, which hopefully makes up for not winning that final match.

Christy references her 49 win record, saying that in her eyes, getting off the ground and escaping Jim Martin on that fateful night in 2010 was her 50th win. Even after her incredible athletic career and fighting for her life, Christy Martin continues to work her hardest.

Next in the Untold spotlight is Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner, whose episode releases Aug. 24 on Netflix.
