What is Untold: Deal with the Devil on Netflix about?

Netflix has become known as a source for investigative documentaries in the form of movies, limited series and shows. The newest docuseries event is the Untold collection, which unveils emotional and provocative stories about notable athletes and incidents in sports history.

The second installment in the series Untold: Deal with the Devil features Christy Martin, one of the most influential female boxers in history.

She became a superstar after winning the undercard match before Mike Tyson. Despite a multitude of what should have been career-ending injuries, Martin retired from boxing with 49 wins, 31 by KO.

Besides being in the hall of fame, Martin is considered to be a trailblazer for the legitimization of women’s boxing. Behind the scenes, however, Martin was in a world of struggle. “I was on top of the world, but my private life was the opposite” Martin says in the trailer.

What is Untold: Deal with the Devil about?

Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis of the episode:

"Christy Martin broke boundaries and noses as she rose in the boxing world, but her public persona belied personal demons, abuse and a threat on her life."

Now 53 years old, Martin will look back on not only her career but also her personal struggles never before seen by camera. We’ll get a detailed look at the 2010 criminal case where Martin’s ex-husband tried to murder her. She retells what her relationship was with substance abuse, her husband and her sexual orientation.

The episode will include a number of perspectives including Christy Martin herself, ex-husband James Martin and Mike Tyson.

The Untold docuseries will continue next with Caitlyn Jenner’s story, releasing on Aug. 24. In all, this volume will consist of five individual stories, though there’s a chance there could be additional seasons.
