Netflix’s latest true-crime docuseries isn’t for the faint of heart. Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami is one true-crime series that will make you sit up and take notice. This story has been told before, but this limited series takes a deep dive into the stories of everyone involved.

Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami, a six-part limited series, is the latest addition to Netflix’s extensive catalog of true-crime series.

This series is directed by Billy Corben (Screwball), who has directed three other documentary films bases on the Cocaine Cowboys. Corben knows this story better than anyone else who wasn’t actually involved, and this series takes a deeper look at all sides of the story.

This series looks into the legal aspects of this story and the payoffs and jury tampering that kept them out of prison for so long. There is an interestingly energetic feel to these interviews of career criminals that seem all too comfortable in the criminal world.

What is Cocaine Cowboys on Netflix about?

The Netflix limited series Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami tells the rise and fall of Miami’s two biggest drug dealers Salvador “Sal” Magluta and Augusto “Willy” Falcon. The two men organized and operated the largest cocaine trafficking ring in South Florida history.

In1991, they were indicted by a federal grand jury for a long list of trafficking crimes and were accused of importing and distributing 75 tons of cocaine (150,000 lbs). They were found not guilty of the charges, and after the trial, the United States Attorney’s Office investigated Magluta and Falcon’s finances. During this investigation, it was discovered that members of that jury, including the foreman, were bribed by the duo.

This series uses first-person accounts of Magluta and Augusto’s activities and many others involved in their operation. It is a candid look into a world unknown to the majority of viewers.

Netflix official synopsis:

"Fifteen years after the release of his cult classic film comes director Billy Corben’s Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami, a six-part saga on the South Florida traffickers indicted in one of the largest drug cases in U.S. history."

The Daily Beast sums up this series with this colorful description:

"Full of diagonal split-screens and transitional wipes, pastel colors, movie clips, pop songs, graphics and archival footage, his work strives to come on like a cocaine high."
