If you have been watching Outer Banks and wondering whether some of these treasures the Pogues are chasing down exist in real life, you’re not alone. Outer Banks season 2 introduced the Cross of Santo Domingo, and it’s quite the hot commodity in the series.

Obviously, the Pogues have plenty of big fish to fry in Outer Banks season 2, including clearing John B’s name in the murder of Sheriff Peterkin and, oh yeah, stealing the gold back from Ward. But their cup runneth over with new discoveries in season 2.

Before long, Pope runs into a long-kept secret in the history of his family and their ties to the legendary Denmark Tanny, who’s the central figure behind the treasure of the Royal Merchant. Upon this discovery, the Pogues have a new treasure to hunt: the Cross of Santo Domingo.

However, they aren’t the only ones after the coveted ancient relic with the supposed power to heal. They race against Limbrey and Rafe to snatch the cross in a life-or-death mission. But is this cross actually real outside of Outer Banks?

Is the Cross of Santo Domingo real in Outer Banks season 2?

According to a quick search, the Cross of Santo Domingo isn’t an actual cross that exists in the world or holds special meaning. In fact, it appears to be a reference to an episode of the television series The Lone Ranger that ran from 1949 to 1957.

The season 5 episode “Cross of Santo Domingo” aired in 1956 and told the story of a monk whose valuable religious relic (that’s the cross!) had been stolen by a group of outlaws. Clearly, the thematic similarities are not lost in Outer Banks’ allusion.

While Santo Domingo is a real place in the Dominican Republic, the cross featured in Outer Banks season 2 doesn’t seem to based on a well-known, famous cross, though other connections to real crosses could certainly be made. But classic TV junkies may have just gotten the reference that will surely go over many, many of our heads.
