Who killed Sheriff Peterkin in Outer Banks?

Outer Banks returns for its second season on Netflix Friday, July 30. The stakes going into season 2 are sky high considering John B.’s running from a murder charge.

How did this surf-loving, treasure hunting novice end up with a criminal rap sheet involving the shooting of Sheriff Susan Peterkin?

Spoilers ahead of Outer Banks season 1

To put it short and sweet, he was framed.

John B. didn’t kill Peterkin. He wasn’t even in possession of the murder weapon. However, if the police ever do get put on the right track, they won’t have to look far for her actual killer.

Who shot Sheriff Peterkin in Outer Banks?

Rafe Cameron murdered the sheriff. Seeing his father being arrested at gunpoint by Peterkin, he took action and, as things tend to go for Rafe, he committed an act he couldn’t take back.

In an effort to save his son, Ward lied as he is often wont to do. He told Deputy Shoupe that John B. shot her which prompted a manhunt for the teen across the Outer Banks. Ward was only able to do this because Shoupe arrived after Peterkin had fallen unconscious.

Had the sheriff lived, she’d have been able to tell her officers who shot her. Peterkin knew it was Rafe. She could have cleared John B.’s name the same way she was initially seeking justice for his father Big John who’d been killed by Ward.

Unfortunately, her passing was used by the Camerons to make John B. a scapegoat for Rafe’s crime. Word went out that 25,000 dollars would be awarded to the person who brought him into the authorities. Nowhere on the barrier islands was safe after that announcement.

In a last ditch effort, with Sarah in tow, John B. made his escape from the Outer Banks in the middle of a storm. The two made it through just barely, but everyone back home thinks they’re dead. Even the Pogues who did everything they could to make sure the two got away safely.
