5 best shows on Netflix this weekend: Supernatural, Too Hot to Handle and more

Downton Abbey

Recently, all six seasons of the PBS period drama Downton Abbey were added to the Netflix catalog. This series ran from 2010-2015 and was created by Julian Fellowes.

The series is set at the Yorkshire country estate, Downton Abbey, and follows the life of the Crawley family and their domestic servants in the years 1912-1926. The series shows the vast differences between life upstairs and down. We also see the numerous historical events this period brings and how it affected the family and their servants.

This series is a wonderful period drama with beautifully written characters whose lives you become invested in. The cast list is extensive but includes wonderful actors including Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jim Carer, Michelle Dockery, Rob James-Collier, Lily James, Allen Leech, Maggie Smith, Dan Stevens and Matthew Goode.

If you enjoy lavish period dramas set in the class-based society of 20th century Britain, this series is for you. You will enjoy the highs and lows right along with the characters and become overly emotional as you follow the story of the Crawleys.

On a side note, the estate home of Downton Abbey, in reality, is Highclere Castle in Hampshire and serves as a prestigious backdrop for the series.

Grey’s Anatomy

On July 3, the 17th season of Grey’s Anatomy will be released on Netflix. The medical drama premiered in 2007 and was renewed for season 18 in 2021. It is the longest-running primetime show currently airing on ABC and the longest-running scripted primetime series carried by ABC.

The series is an account of the residents, interns, and attending doctors at a hospital in Seattle. The story shows the lives of medical professionals on the job and off and the balance needed to support both.

Ellen Pompeo portrays Meredith Grey, who was the main focus at the beginning of the series. Her mother was a famous general surgeon, giving Meredith much to live up to. Over the years, the focus is still on Meredith, but so many others play a major part in the story.
