Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

Release Year: 2022

Directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon

Cast: Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley, Scoot McNairy, Brett Gelman, Ego Nwodim, and Shawn Mendes

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile was added to Netflix in 2023, thanks to Netflix’s deal with Sony that brings new Sony movies to the streaming service a few months after their theatrical run. The movie premiered in theaters in October 2022.

I did not expect a few things to happen with this movie. First of all, I wasn’t sure it would be received that well on Netflix, but it had been in the Netflix Top 10 for a while after it was added to Netflix. And second, I did not expect to actually like this movie, but it’s really fun and good. Once you get used to a giant, singing crocodile with the voice of Shawn Mendes, it’s really good.

The movie tells the story of Lyle, a singing crocodile with stage fright. After his old partner/friend ditches him, Lyle meets and befriends a new family after they find him living in their attic.

Javier Bardem and Shawn Mendes are so great in the movie, as are Constance Wu and Scoot McNairy, but the real selling point is Josh (Winslow Fegley) and Lyle’s relationship. Fegley is such a talented actor. If he wasn’t able to sell this performance and do it well, I don’t think the movie would have worked this well.
