Viola Davis, Shelia Atim and Lashana Lynch star in THE WOMAN KING /

The Woman King

Release Year: 2022

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood

Cast: Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega

The Woman King was released on Netflix in early 2023, and it’s been a big hit on the streaming service. The movie instantly jumped to the top of the Netflix Top 10. While it left the top spot by now, it hung around in the Netflix Top 10 for a while, as well.

The movie premiered in theaters in September 2022, but it arrived on Netflix as part of Netflix’s deal with Sony that brings new movies to the streamer a few months after the theatrical run.

The Woman King is set in the 1800s and tells the story of Nanisca (Viola Davis) who leads a group of female warriors against slave traders and other threats. Davis is outstanding in this movie. It’s so lame that she was snubbed for an Oscar nomination. I really feel like The Woman King and Davis should have been nominated.

There are not many newer movies as good as The Woman King on Netflix right now. And, that’s why The Woman King is a watch, not a skip. Check it out when you have time to give this movie your full attention.

Verdict: WATCH
