New Sony movies are coming to Netflix starting in 2022

Netflix and Sony agreed to a new licensing deal that begins in 2022, according to a report from Deadline.

The deal means all of the new Sony movies that are released on or after Jan. 1, 2022, will be coming to Netflix after the movie’s release in theaters. According to the report, the movies will remain on Netflix for 18 months.

For those keeping track, this deal is very similar to the deal Netflix struck with Disney that began in 2016. It brought all the Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and titles under the Disney umbrella to Netflix for 18 months.

Deadline is reporting Netflix paid $1 billion for the rights to the new Sony movies through 2026.

Which Sony movies will be on Netflix?

This is the question everyone wants to know! There are a number of Sony movies already on the schedule for 2022, including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, Morbius, Uncharted, Where the Crawdads Sing, and more. Those movies will be some of the first new Sony movies to be released on Netflix.

We’re also going to be seeing all the new movies from a variety of different Sony franchises, including Spider-Man, Venom, Men in Black, Bad Boys, Hotel Transylvania, Ghostbusters, Zombieland, and more, assuming Sony makes more movies from those franchises.

The deal does not include Spider-Man: No Way Home right now. The movie is slated to premiere in 2021, but that could change with the pandemic delaying big movie releases. We’ve seen it happen with a number of movies so far.

Deadline is also reporting that the deal includes some movies from the Sony library. We don’t know which movies those are, but we have to imagine that it will be for the Spider-Man movies, new and old, along with Men in Black, Bad Boys, Jumanji, and some of the Sony hits.
