The recent film Judas and the Black Messiah is one of the most notable new movies of the 2021 awards season. It’s a superb movie on its own merits, featuring a Golden Globe-nominated performance from Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya.

Judas and the Black Messiah is a biopic primarily centered around the lives of Fred Hampton (Kaluuya), the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party in 1960s Chicago, and FBI informant William O’Neal (a stellar LaKeith Stanfield). O’Neal is tasked with infiltrating the Black Panthers on behalf of the FBI, thus assisting their operation to “neutralize” the perceived threat of Hampton. It’s one of the most tragic moments in American history dramatized for the silver screen. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Algee Smith, and Ashton Sanders.

Judas and the Black Messiah is, simply put, one of the best movies of 2021 so far and this year’s movie awards season. It’s garnered acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and been nominated for Best Supporting Actor (for Kaluuya’s stunning, honorable portrayal of Fred Hampton) and Best Original Song (H.E.R.’s “Fight for You”) at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, among accolades from many other awards organizations.

Directed and co-written by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah should rise to the top of your watchlist, if it isn’t on your radar already. How can you see it?

Where can I watch Judas and the Black Messiah?

Unfortunately, Judas and the Black Messiah is not on Netflix. As it is distributed by Warner Bros., it’s designed to land on HBO Max. The benchmark plan by Warners details that each of their new films will premiere simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

The catch is, Judas and the Black Messiah is exclusively on HBO Max for a month before being removed and later slated for a more traditional home video release. Having premiered earlier in February, Judas and the Black Messiah should be on the streaming service until March 12. If you want to see the movie after March 12, you’ll have to look to theaters or wait some time until its release on VOD.

You can certainly enjoy some other Netflix content that features Judas and the Black Messiah performers!

I might suggest the “Fifteen Million Merits” episode of Black Mirror for starters, which features a raw, grating performance from Daniel Kaluuya. In addition, LaKeith Stanfield delves into his enigmatic, despicable character in Uncut Gems, and Dominique Fishback gives a star-making supporting performance in the Netflix original Project Power.
