Lona Skinner (Sami Gayle) and Bennett Russell (Jacob Latimore) absolutely despise one another. That’s what happens when you’re constantly in direct academic competition with the same person for years.
High achievers with their sights on the Ivy leagues, Lona and Bennett’s most recent dispute is over who should get to be president of their two-person debate club. It’s a battle of wills that even their mothers Amy (Christina Hendricks) and Julia (Uzo Aduba) take part in to the teens’ utter embarrassment.
When it becomes clear that the only way Bennett and Lona will qualify for the state regionals, and have a shot at the state championship, is if they team-up, the two put their differences aside for their greater good.
As they prepare for the competition, the animosity between the two begins to lessen until they achieve a sense of camaraderie. Spending so much time together not only softens their attitudes toward each other, it softens their hearts. Academics and college have always been at the forefront of their minds, but maybe it’s time to put the books aside for a bit and let themselves have fun.
Candy Jar deals with the loss and contains mild language.
