Teen shows with Black leads: Moesha
Rated TV-PG
Moesha is a beloved ’90s sitcom that aired from 1996-2001. Starring R&B singer Brandy Norwood, the series followed high school student Moesha Mitchell’s adolescent ups and downs.
The daughter of widowed car salesman Frank (William Allen Young), Moesha is used to being the woman of the house in her mother’s absence. But when her father marries Dee, a teacher at her high school, Moesha’s family dynamic changes along with her sense of home.
Now, figuring out where she fits in this new family structure on top of the everyday struggles of school and relationships, Moesha juggles trying to have fun with her friends and asserting her independence.
With her best friends Kim Parker (Countess Vaughn), Niecy Jackson (Shar Jackson), and Hakeem Campbell (Lamont Bentley), Moesha learns about life and love all while getting themselves in and out of some hilarious situations. Be prepared for shenanigans, hijinks, and some terribly laid plans.
Moesha spans six seasons and follows Moesha’s life from 15 to 20 years old. The series deals with issues common to teen shows such as the day-to-day impact of gender prejudice and inequality within schools, race, drug and alcohol use, sexual exploration, and teen pregnancy. Along with infidelity and dementia.
All six seasons of Moesha are available to stream.
