Teen shows with Black leads: On My Block

Rated TV-14

On My Block is a teen comedy-drama focused on four teens who live in a Los Angeles neighborhood called Freeridge.

Monse Finnie (Sierra Capri), Ruben “Ruby” Martinez Jr. (Jason Genao), Jamal Turner (Brett Gray), and Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco) have been friends for what seems like forever but their friendship is about to be tested by their first steps into high school.

Unbeknownst to Ruby and Jamal, Monse and Cesar have been involved in a relationship. The relationship becomes strained when Monse returns from a summer writing camp and finds out Cesar has been jumped into the Santos gang. He’s also publicly claimed that they’ve slept together which becomes a point of contention between him, Jamal, and Ruby along with his gang involvement.

Cesar, however, is doing what he can to protect Monse from the wandering eyes and minds of the Santos gang members who have taken notice of her. He didn’t want to become a Santos, but after his older brother Oscar (Julio Macias), nickname Spooky, is released from prison, it was expected that he follow in his footsteps.

Monse, determined to help Cesar, gets Jamal and Ruby to come around because she refuses to leave Cesar to life in a gang, a fate he doesn’t want.

On My Block deals with issues of gang life, violence, sexual exploration, and alcohol/drug use.

All three seasons of On My Block are available to stream. The series has been renewed for a final season.
