What is Space Sweepers about?

Ever since news broke that the film widely regarded to be the first Korean space blockbuster was going to make its way to Netflix, subscribers have been curious to know more about the South Korean space opera from A Werewolf Boy director Jo Sung-hee. Space Sweepers looks like an out of this world thrill ride resembling other massive hits like Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy that fans of the genre will most assuredly not want to miss.

Space Sweepers features an all-star cast including big names like Jin Seon-kyu, who also stars in Netflix’swell-regarded Kingdom series. Other heavy hitters include The Battleship Island, and A Werewolf Boy’s Song Joong-ki, and The Handmaiden’s Kim Tae-ri.

Yoo Hai-jin provides voice work and demotion capture action for the Space Sweepers robot character who fans will recognize from Confidential Assignment. And last but not least, Richard Armitage from The Hobbit trilogy, Ocean’s 8, and Berlin Station is also in the mix, adding to the already many reasons subscribers shouldn’t sleep on this epic science fiction affair.

The Netflix movie is packed to the brim with visually stunning VFX, which was expertly crafted by the fine folks at Dexter Studios, who are also known for the spectacular action films Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds and Ashfall. It would appear that everything about Space Sweepers is outstanding, but what really sets it apart is its enticing narrative.

What is Space Sweepers?

The movie takes place in the year 2092 where the planet earth is no longer habitable for human beings. This means that everyone has moved into Earth’s orbit, where an entire civilization has been built consisting of space stations and elevator systems that look like something out of Futurama.

All of these people being up there mean there is a lot of space junk to salvage and Space Sweepers follows a ragtag crew of junkers that chase down valuable space garbage in hopes of finding that big score.

One day searching through the debris for something worth some money, they stumble upon a small girl who turns out to be a humanoid robot classified as a dangerous weapon of mass destruction. Thinking this could be their big payday; they arrange a deal that doesn’t go as planned, resulting in one wild, action-packed space adventure.

Space Sweepers synopsis

Space Sweepers premieres on Netflix on Friday, Feb. 5.

"Set in the year 2092 and follows the crew of a space junk collector ship called The Victory. When they discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy that’s known to be a weapon of mass destruction, they get involved in a risky business deal."
