Could Netflix save Katy Keene?

Katy Keene is an interesting case study in the streaming era. The CW ordered the Riverdale spinoff and sister series and moved Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie in Riverdale, to the series alongside Lucy Hale and more.

Around this time, The CW ended its output deal that brought all new seasons to Netflix. Instead, Katy Keene would move to HBO Max as the new streaming service launched.

This was a huge mistake. Riverdale is one of the most popular teen shows on Netflix around the world. New episodes are added to Netflix (Non-US) directly after they air on The CW. US fans wait until the season is over, but fans watch Riverdale on Netflix and many think it’s a Netflix original show.

Netflix also was a huge part in Riverdale’s rise to the top of teen TV dominance. The first season’s ratings were not good, and then, the show moved to Netflix after season 1. By the season 2 premiere, the ratings are much better because those Netflix viewers tuned in.

The potential was there to do this with Katy Keene, but they didn’t.

I consider Katy Keene to be a casualty of the streaming wars. Had the series aired on The CW and moved to Netflix right after it finished the first season, there’s no doubt in my mind that the show would be a hit.

Because Katy Keene went HBO Max, which was basically just a shinier HBO, no one knew what it was. Now, it’s canceled. It’d be great if Netflix could find a way to save this series!
