There are so many great foreign-language shows on Netflix and I’m here to tell you about one that you should check out. Starring Omar Sy, Lupin is a French comedy-adventure series that premiered on Netflix just a few days ago on January 8, 2021.

The first season is split into two parts, each of which has five episodes.

Sy plays an expert thief named Assane Diop, who was orphaned as a young man after his father was framed for a crime he did not commit. More than two decades later, Diop decides to use his skills to seek revenge on the wealthy man who caused his father’s death.

Along with Omar Sy, the series also stars Vincent Londez, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab, Clotilde Hesme, Hervé Pierre, Ludivine Sagnier, Etan Simon, Shirine Boutella, Johann Dionnet, Vincent Garanger, Nicole Garcia, Mamadou Haidara, and Adama Niane.

If you’re wondering whether or not Lupin is based on a novel, then you’re in luck. We have the answer for you below.

Is Lupin on Netflix based on a real book?

The show takes inspiration from a character named Arsène Lupin, a fictional thief created by French writer Maurice Leblanc. The character appears in 17 novels, 39 novellas, and numerous short stories. While the character is a criminal by trade, he is characterized as being a gentlemen and a master of disguise. He definitely sounds like an interesting person! The first story featuring Lupin, titled “The Arrest of Arsène Lupin,” was published in 1905.
