A third dojo comes to Cobra Kai: Eagle Fang Karate

When Cobra Kai season 3 premiered among the Netflix new releases on Jan. 1, a new dojo joined the mix: Eagle Fang Karate.

But will Eagle Fang Karate be able to compete with Cobra Kai and Miyagi-do? Or will it join forces with one of them?

Kreese steals Cobra Kai

There were a lot of cliffhangers at the end of Cobra Kai season 2. In addition to the school-wide brawl that put Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) in a coma, Kreese (Martin Kove) basically stole Cobra Kai, the dojo he’d originally founded but that John “Johnny” Lawrence (William Zabka) had resurrected in season 1.

Johnny hadn’t always done the right thing, but like he did in the first season, he tried to make better choices during season 2. One of those decisions was abandoning one of Kreese’s and Cobra Kai’s valued tenets: “No mercy.”

Johnny showed mercy to his former sensei, Kreese, when he learned Kreese had fallen on hard times. Kreese made it clear he’d like to help with the dojo, which sounded like a great idea to Johnny but he soon learned that was a big mistake.

Life may have humbled Kreese financially, but it didn’t help him change for the better. If anything, it made him worse. Kreese proves to be as ruthless as he’s ever been. He imparts his sinister wisdom and ways to the Cobra Kais.

Johnny is not on board with his methods or philosophies at all anymore. By the time he realizes that, though, it’s too late. Kreese has stolen the dojo from him and made it his own again.

Johnny starts a new dojo

Season 3 opens with Johnny having pretty much given up on everything, including himself.

But just as Miguel did in season 1, he makes Johnny a better person again. As Miguel heals, so does Johnny. So much so he starts talking about opening another dojo.

And that’s what he does. It doesn’t have many members…or even walls.

“Do you need a dojo to be a dojo?” he asks. Hopefully not, because Johnny can’t afford rent anywhere.

He sets up shop in a public park with only Miguel and a few of the “weaker linkers” that got kicked out of Cobra Kai as his students.

Now he has to figure out what to call his new dojo.

Johnny makes his case for Eagle Fang Karate

Johnny knows his new dojo needs to have a tough name. One that commands respect, elicits power and projects dominance if they’re going to be taken seriously.

At first, he suggests keeping it Cobra Kai but spelling “cobra” with a K.

Miguel quickly helps him see what a bad idea that would be when Johnny says then their initials would be “KKK.” Um, no. (I’m also not sure where the third “K” would come from.)

At their first class, Johnny tells his students that, yes, cobras are strong, and that they may be the king of the jungle, but the world is more than a jungle. (Has he never heard of lions or seen The Lion King?) He says there’s only one animal that can kill a cobra.

That’s when Bert says, “Mongoose?”

Johnny says, “No, Bert. Don’t be ridiculous.”

Oh, Johnny. Between the king of the jungle thing, calling hashtags “hashbrowns” and your other misguided interpretations of the world, how you came up with your name for your new dojo is one of the funniest.

Johnny went with an eagle. Not just any eagle, though. One with fangs.

Mitch points out that eagles don’t have fangs.

Johnny’s not concerned with any of that. He thinks Eagle Fang Karate sounds tough, so that settles the name for his new dojo.

Will Eagle Fang Karate last?

The kicker is, after going through all of the trouble of creating a new dojo, will it be able to compete with Cobra Kai or Miyago-do?

Or will it find a new ally with one of its rival dojos?

**Spoiler alert**

Two dojos are better than one, but Johnny has no plans to merge with Kreese’s.

Daniel and Miyagi-do, though, are a different matter. Season 3 ends with the two dojos coming together to train, which sets up a whole lot of speculation about where Cobra Kai season 4 will head.

Will Eagle Fang Karate keep that name? Will it totally merge with Miyagi-do? Or will they combine to form something entirely new?

Guess we’ll find out next season!
