6 Netflix shows and movies like Bridgerton

Happy almost New Year’s, Netflix Lifers! We’re in that weird in-between time where Christmas is over but another holiday is about to come blasting through the door in a few days. As such it’s the perfect time to binge a new-to-you Netflix shows or movies as the holidays wind to a close. Our recommendation list for you is based on the buzzy Shonda Rhimes produced Bridgerton series based on the books by Julie Quinn.

Whether you enjoyed the twists and turns detailed by Lady Whistledown–or you decided to skip the series because of the glossed over sexual assault scene–we have a list compiled for those looking to indulge in court intrigue, travel back in time with a period piece, or wish to follow the stories and scandals of people who know too much about each other.

From small-town shenanigans, romantic misunderstandings, humorous entanglements, ruinous relationships, and the marriage of political and social agendas, these six shows and films will catapult you into the past or have you contend with the messiest of presents. No matter what you choose, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

1. Pride & Prejudice

The 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen is a visual masterpiece. Starring Kiera Knightley as the quick-witted and bookish Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as the socially anxious and taciturn Mr. Darcy, the film is a classic tale of first impressions not being what they seem and love blooming in an unexpected place.

2. Reign

This unapologetically anachronistic and historically inaccurate drama was a CW darling from 2013-2017. Airing four seasons, Reign centered on Mary, Queen of Scots, her marriage to Prince Francis, the French court, and Mary’s ladies-in-waiting. Part romance and part soap opera, the series explores topics of love, friendship, and monarchies as well as difficult issues concerning legitimacy, adultery, murder, and assault.
