Why It’s Underrated: In spite of 2020 presenting unprecedented challenges for the entertainment industry, Netflix showed no signs of slowing down its slate of original content. The streaming giant introduced some of its most popular new series in 2020, including the likes of Outer Banks, Never Have I Ever and Sweet Magnolias. Their popularity, along with many other new hits, seemed to overshadow the less buzzy fresh offerings, such as the underrated Warrior Nun.

Based on the Warrior Nun Areala comic book character by Ben Dunn, Warrior Nun stars Alba Baptista as Ava Silva, a 19-year-old who finds herself waking up in a morgue with an artifact lodged in her back. The artifact in Ava’s back seems to signify that she’s now part of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, a group that’s responsible for fighting the demons that have come to Earth. However, powers from heaven and hell battle for control over Ava.

Warrior Nun debuted on Netflix in July 2020 and premiered to mostly positive reviews. The first season of the series holds a respectable 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics compared the series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, though noted the newbie lacks the quippy nature of the beloved ’90s teen fantasy series. Of course, Warrior Nun will only continue to grow and find its footing in season 2, which the underrated series was picked up for a month after its debut.
