Netflix adds 28 new movies and shows this week

We are another week closer to the holidays and 2021! But beyond getting closer to the end of this dark abyss of a year, a new week also means a bunch of new movies and shows will be added to Netflix. Whether you’re looking for an action thriller, a new documentary, a new Ryan Murphy movie, or a show based on anime, Netflix has something for everyone this week.

If you’re in the mood for a crime drama with a whole lot of action, you must check out Ava when it comes to Netflix on Monday, Dec. 7. It stars Jessica Chastain, John Malkovich, Common, Geena Davis, Colin Farrell, Ioan Gruffudd, and Jess Wexler.

While the movie has been shown in limited theaters and was available on VOD through a couple, this is its first wide release.

The movie follows Ava, an assassin who works for a black ops organization and killing high-profile targets. But when one of her jobs goes wrong, she has to fight to stay alive.

More in the mood for something lighter? Giving Voice is a new documentary about the August Wilson Monologue Competition and hits Netflix on Friday, Dec. 11. The competition allows thousands of high school kids to perform for a chance at a spot on Broadway. The documentary also features stars who have starred in August Wilson’s work like Viola Davis and Denzel Washington. This looks really good!

Ryan Murphy is also back on Netflix this week with The Prom. It comes to the streaming service on Friday, Dec. 11. The Prom stars Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, James Corden, Andrew Rannells, and Tracy Ullman.

The movie follows a group of theater stars who end up in Indiana to support a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to prom. The movie is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. This looks both heartwarming and hilarious.

This week also brings the first season of Alice in Borderland on Thursday, Dec. 10. Based on the anime series by Haro Aso, the series follows three high school boys, Arisu, Karube, and Segawa, who are pretty bored with their lives. But one night. Arisu wishes he could live in a different world.

Well, guess what happens next? His wish is granted and the three boys are sent to a post-apocalyptic parallel universe.

They end up finding what looks like an empty festival but turns out to be the beginning of “the game.” Now, they must figure out how to play “the game” if they want to survive.
