When is Ryan Murphy’s The Prom coming to Netflix?

The Prom, a musical comedy from director Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story), is set to release on Netflix on Dec.11, 2020.

Netflix released the first look photos on social media. From the looks of those four photos, this is the party you want to be invited to!

The Prom is adapted from the 2016 Broadway musical of the same name. Co-writers of the stage production, Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin, adapted the script for the screen.

The cast is outstanding. Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose, Kerry Washington, and Jo Ellen Pellman star in the new Netflix movie.

This will be Murphy’s third feature film. The movie follows a high schooler, Emma (Pellman), who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, but the town they live in is very conservative and won’t allow this to happen. They seek the help of a troupe of washed-up Broadway actors who are looking for something to help them shine some positive light on themselves.  The actors travel from NYC to Edgewater, Indiana to assist the girls in their fight against the school district’s strict PTA.

This is a musical movie, and fans of the stage production probably want to know if any of the same songs will be featured. Rest assured that all of the stage production songs are included, and one new song as been added for the film. The new song is a ballad about acceptance and prejudice.

Murphy told Collider in an interview:

"“I love the message of it. I really related to the protagonist. Emma is from Indiana and is not allowed to go to her prom because she’s gay. And I’m from Indiana and I wasn’t allowed to take a man or a male compadre to my prom. I related to it, so I believed in the message.”"

In September, Murphy shared this tweet showing the new marquee-type poster art for the film. It showcases the actor’s name in lights, in purple, just as it should be.
