Must-watch movies on Netflix: 50. The Fundamentals of Caring

Release Year: 2016

Directed By: Rob Burnett

Starring: Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Ehle, Megan Ferguson, Frederick Weller, Bobby Cannavale, Julia Denton

Paul Rudd stars in The Fundamentals of Caring as Ben, a retired writer who leaves his work behind in the wake of a personal tragedy that upends his entire being. Instead, he takes a job as a caregiver for an 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy named Trevor (Craig Roberts). In order to allow Trevor to see the world he hasn’t been able to for much of his life, Ben takes him on a road trip, during which they pick up feisty hitchhiker Dot (Selena Gomez) and expectant mother Peaches (Megan Ferguson) for the life-changing trip of a lifetime.

The Fundamentals of Caring first premiered on Netflix in June 2016 and holds a 77% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. By far, the touching road-trip dramedy has been one of the most underrated original movies on the streaming service. Obviously, Paul Rudd is dependably likable as Ben and finds harmonious chemistry with Craig Roberts, but Selena Gomez delivers one of her finest acting performances to date. From start to finish, The Fundamentals of Caring takes the viewer along for a ride full of laughs, catharsis, romance and everything you want from a must-watch movie.
