All six episodes of The Queens Gambit will be on Netflix tonight
It’s time for a new Netflix series. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the upcoming miniseries The Queen’s Gambit. It starts streaming tonight.
You won’t have to wait too long. All six episodes will drop at 3:01 a.m. ET. That means you’re only waiting until 12:01 a.m. if you’re on the west coast.
It’s billed as a miniseries, which means there aren’t any plans right now to run a second season. Of course, that doesn’t mean there never will be a second season. Big Little Lies on HBO and The Great on Hulu are two series that were billed as limited series but landed second seasons. However, don’t be surprised if Netflix sticks with just one season, a little like I-Land.
What is The Queen’s Gambit about?
The series is based on Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel of the same name, and it follows a young woman who turns out to be a chess genius. Throughout six episodes, we’ll watch the character, Beth, grow up learning chess and striving to be the best. There are some episodes where we see eight-year-old Beth play, and others that lead to the 22-year-old young woman that she becomes.
However, Beth’s life isn’t easy. She struggles with a drug addiction. Chess is a solitary life. She spends all this time trying to become the Grandmaster in chess that she loses part of herself. The thought of escape is just too tempting to pass up.
There have been many attempts to turn the novel into a movie or series. The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix is the first successful attempt, as others fell through at various stages.
While the series is classed as a psychological thriller, the novel itself covers multiple genres. It’s a little like Outlander and difficult to put into one place.
