Understanding Miles’s story on The Haunting of Bly Manor

Every character on The Haunting of Bly Manor had some sort of backstory or something happen to them. Some characters had scarier stories than others, with Miles having one of the creepiest.

Sometimes, it seemed like Miles’s personality completely changed. Why exactly was that? It’s time break down everything that happened to Miles.

Forcing expulsion to return home

The story with Miles started with him being expelled from boarding school. He wasn’t possessed at this point. Miles got a letter from Flora to say “come home,” and he did everything he could to make that happened.

Sent home, that was when things got very bad.

Understanding Miles’s changing personality

Sometimes, Miles could be a sweet young man. Then there were times he was rude, argumentative, and downright dangerous on The Haunting of Bly Manor. How was that possible? Was it some sort of mental illness?

Nope! He was possessed by Peter’s ghost.

After Peter was killed by the Lady in the Lake, Peter accidentally touched Miles. From there, he learned he could possess humans, and Miles was the usual human Peter would possess. On one of those occasions, it looked like Miles pushed Hannah down the well, but Peter was in control at the time.

Miles had no idea what happened when he was being possessed, being tucked away in memories.

Miles even said “it’s you, it’s me, it’s us,” inviting Peter in to possess him permanently. This was Peter’s attempt to get off the grounds of Bly Manor with Ms. Jessel. It didn’t work since Ms. Jessel didn’t want to permanently possess Flora, knowing it was wrong.

Did Miles remember the events during The Haunting of Bly Manor?

Miles wasn’t in control when the events surrounding the Lady in the Lake, Flora, and Dani took place. He only became back in control when Dani sacrificed herself to save Flora. Peter’s ghost disappeared, finally allowed to leave the grounds.

At first, Miles remembered the scariness of Bly Manor. Over time, he would forget everything that happened. While he’d remember Bly and the people there, he wouldn’t remember the full details or the traumatic events that happened. Henry never wanted his nephew and niece (really, his daughter) to remember.

So, when it came to an older Jamie telling the story, Miles didn’t say anything about the tale being familiar. We just know he got to live a happier life, as he’s at Flora’s wedding in 2007.
