All you need to know about the Lady in the Lake on The Haunting of Bly Manor

There were plenty of ghosts throughout The Haunting of Bly Manor. One stood out more than the others, the Lady in the Lake.

She was a ghost that both Miles and Flora were scared of. They feared others being outside their rooms at night, knowing they could be killed by the lady who roamed the halls at night. It wasn’t every night, but enough to be worried about.

Who was this Lady in the Lake? Why did she roam and what did she want? We wouldn’t learn the truth until The Haunting of Bly Manor episode eight.

The story of the Lady of Bly Manor

Episode eight took us to the past, about 400 years or so. We learned about the sisters of the former Lord of Bly Manor. Viola, as the eldest, would need to marry first and find a way to keep the house in their family. They did that by Viola marrying a cousin.

While Viola had a daughter, she suffered from sickness. It wasn’t the plague, but it was a serious sickness that was contagious and would likely kill her in months. She was separated by everyone in the house, not even allowed to see her own daughter.

Viola didn’t die within months, though. She held on for years, and it was only when her sister killed her that she died.

Viola was trapped in her belongings, dresses and jewelry that she had collected throughout her life. She wanted them to go to her daughter, but her sister opened the chest. Remembering her sister had killed her and remembering the jealousy and hatred she felt toward her sister, she killed Perdita through a dress Perdita had removed from the chest.

How did Viola end up at the bottom of the lake?

Viola’s husband was superstitious. After the death of Perdita, he decided to move out of Bly Manor with his daughter. Before they left, they placed the haunted chest at the bottom of the lake.

And so, Viola was trapped at the bottom of the lake. She would sleep, wake, and walk. All she wanted was to find her daughter, but as the years passed, she’d forgotten everything. Eventually, the process of sleeping, waking, and walking just became a habit, and she would kill everyone in her path.

One night, she found a small child in the bed in her old bedroom. At this point, Viola couldn’t remember why she was walking or who she was looking for. All she remembered was that she wanted a child, and here was a child. So, she took the child into the lake, killing him.

Anyone who died on the grounds was stuck there. They would all end up trapped, slowing forgetting who they were. Their faces would disappear as Viola continued to sleep and forget everything.

Stopping the Lady in the Lake on The Haunting of Bly Manor

Was there any way to stop the Lady in the Lake? One night, Dani stepped in the way of Viola as she walked. Dani was dragged to the bedroom, where she would be killed. However, Flora jumped up on the bed.

Seeing the young girl, Viola suddenly remembered everything. She saw Flora as her own daughter, and so, the Lady in the Lake picked up Flora and left Dani alive in the room.

Dani woke up in time to rush out to the lake. She shouted “it’s me, it’s you, it’s us,” stopping the Lady in the Lake and inviting Viola in. That sacrifice saved Flora’s life, and all the ghosts on the ground were able to move on. They disappeared from the grounds.

Dani would become the Lady in the Lake

Dani survived for some time after the events in 1987, but eventually, the Lady of the Lake would threaten to take over her body. When the time came, Dani headed back to Bly Manor and allowed herself to sink to the bottom of the lake.

Now, Dani would become the Lady in the Lake. However, she wouldn’t wake and walk, and she wouldn’t kill people on the ground. The curse at Bly Manor was broken through that sacrifice.
