Ratched season 1 ending explained: Breaking down the Ratched season 1 ending

Ratched season 1 is now streaming on Netflix and fans have truly been enjoying the drama and twists. The story is well-paced and the performances are brilliant! All in all, Ratched is an addicting and binge-able series.

The back half of the series moves so fast, though, most of us have been rewatching some episodes. If you need a breakdown of the ending or didn’t catch something we’re here with a quick explanation of the events!

Please note there are significant spoilers that follow if you have not yet watched the series! We’re including it all, from deaths to what could happen next. Finish watching the season before reading on.

Spoilers ahead!

What began as a loving, albeit strange, relationship and bond between Mildred Ratched and her brother Edmund, concluded in an unexpected rivalry.

In fact, Edmund is so angry with Mildred, he is hunting her down and won’t stop until she is dead. Mildred returns the feelings, though, and promises to be the one who catches him first. We are definitely Team Mildred here, but how did the siblings get to this place?

Why do Mildred and Edmund now hate each other?

Knowing that Edmund would likely get the electric chair and suffer, Mildred decided to give Edmund a more humane death and euthanize him. It makes sense to Mildred, to everyone, really, except Edmund.

He can’t believe his sister would try to kill him, so he decides to get revenge. And he isn’t alone! Miss Blankley is with him, seeking violence herself, except, she isn’t “Blankley,” her personality is also, at times, that of Dr. Richard Hanover’s.

Miss Blankley and Louise

As we learned early on in the season, Charlotte Blankley suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and she now believes she is Dr. Hanover. Edmund knows she’s not well, but as long as it helps him out, he isn’t concerned. The other person joining Charlotte and Edmund is Louise, the motel owner where Ratched was staying.

Who sold out Ratched?

How does Edmund even know where Ratched is? Someone close to Ratched snitched. I doubt it’s Betsey, she and Mildred became close, but Betsey does have another close friend in Louise, and Louise was never kind to Ratched.

Could it have been Lousie who gave up Ratched’s location after learning about it from Betsy? That’s my guess, but season 3 should answer this soon enough!

While no release date for season 2 has been announced, a second season will be happening, as confirmed by Sarah Paulson herself. We’ll keep you posted with any news.
