Lovecraft Country episode 4 recap: A History of Violence

Lovecraft Country continues to take viewers on one wild ride after another of terrifying, twist-filled adventures. The HBO series from Underground’s Misha Green does a fantastic job of keeping subscribers coming back to find out more about the enthralling tale, and every time a question is answered, three more pop up, making the anticipation for the next affair almost too much to handle.

This week’s episode revealed tons of tantalizing details about Christina Braithwhite’s plans for Tic and showcased plenty of other shocking surprises along the way.

Their journey took them beneath the museum in Boston, where Titus Braithwhites pages were recovered on a ship with someone from long ago who knows how to decode the Language of Adam in its entirety.

There was no shortage of memorable moments from Lovecraft Country in the episode titled “History of Violence.” But out of all the edge of your seat ordeals that went down, these are the five that stand out as the biggest.

5 big moments from Lovecraft Country episode 4

1. Time travel is in play

It turns out the model of the Solar System Hippopylta gets her hands on from Leti’s haunted house is actually a time machine. It’s unknown at this point how it works, but according to Christina, when she was brought before the racist cop that almost killed Letitia via road rage from last week’s episode unveils that the device is why she is in his esteemed company.

Apparently, he is on the entire secret society, sorcerers exist situation and doesn’t like unannounced guests.

Right now, Christina still thinks the model, or orrery as its called, is in Leti’s house and has no idea who really has it.  If it really turns out to be a device to traverse through time with, it would naturally lead many to wonder if Hippoplayta, being the clever person she is, will attempt to use it to bring back Uncle George, who did not make contact with this ordeal, if she can figure out how it works.

Adding time travel is always an interesting factor, but since it has been used so often in recent years, Lovecraft Country will have to continue to think outside the box to avoid yawns and eye rolls when they turn the clock backward or forward.

2. Ruby meets William

It’s starting to look like Christina and William might be the same person, and given how she seems to be one for deception, there’s a good chance that reveal is coming soon. But here, William makes an appearance as soon as Christina exits the screen to knock out those tailing her before heading out to run into Leti’s sister Ruby at a bar.

The two get drunk and eventually hook up, leading many to believe that William now has the attention and possible loyalty of Ruby, giving Christina another edge in continuing her scheme. Ruby’s arc started out somewhat dull, but it shifts into fifth gear fast in the fourth installment of Lovecraft Country, and fans are excited to see where it will be heading.

3. Walk the plank

Tic, Leti, and Montrose find themselves in front of a not very thick piece of wood that leads into darkness. As they walk across it, a swinging blade blocks their way. Then just to add to the madness, the plank begins to disintegrate, causing everyone to move quickly across the uneasy path.

Luckily everyone survives the tumultuous endeavor with Montrose showcasing his jumping skills and confidentially indicating Jesse Owens doesn’t have anything on him. The plank sequence in Lovecraft Country’s latest adds a brilliant amount of addictive tension into the heart of the episode and after all that, this horrifying ordeal wasn’t the last bout of danger the trio would encounter before the credits rolled on “History of Violence.’

4. Tic, Leti, and Montrose get the deciphered pages

After walking the plank and living to tell about it, Montrose, Tic, and Leti finally obtain the pages they are seeking. They get them from a cursed two-spirit woman man from the “Land of Many Waters” who recognized the symbols Titus was trying to translate from a cave, but when she saw Titus for the evil man he was, she refused to decipher any more of the words.

As a result, Titus killed her people and imprisoned her in his vault. The whole place begins to fill with water, and in a daring escape, they all make their way to the magical elevator that connects to Leti’s house.

5. Montrose silences the siren

When they are in the elevator, their new companion attempts to speak, and a terrible screaming noise is all that comes out. Tic knocks her out and later guesses that Titus put a siren curse on the two-spirit being if anyone was ever to discover the contents of the hidden vault.

Tic plans to get her to write down what the symbols mean, finally giving them the upper hand in the story. But for whatever reason, in the biggest shocker of them all, Montrose slits the siren’s throat leaving everybody with their hand son their heads in confusion as the preview plays for next week’s episode, which only continues to heighten the anticipation making the next installment of Lovecraft Country seem like a lifetime away.
