Game of Thrones EPs D.B. Weiss and David Benioff to adapt The Three-Body Problem into Netflix series

In an unexpected and exciting twist, Netflix managed to score the winning big for D.B. Weiss and David Benioff’s highly anticipated first major post Game of Thrones series. As first announced by Entertainment Weekly, the Game of Thrones producers are set to adapt Liu Cixin The Three-Body Problem sci-fi trilogy via a new Netflix Original drama.

While details surrounding the project including its eyed release date, cast and episode count all remain unclear at this time, it has been confirmed the series will be an English-language adaptation  which will “tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.”

Originally anticipated to land at Amazon — who was rumored to be willing to pay a premium rate of roughly $1 billion for the series — The Three-Body Problem is now the first major Netflix project greenlit from the Game of Thrones producing duo as part of their new Netflix deal, which they netted in summer 2019 shortly after the final season of Game of Thrones wrapped.

"“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”"

While the Weiss and Benioff will oversee the project, Cixon will serve as a consulting producer alongside Ken Liu, who translated the novel to English.

Weiss and Benioff have also tapped some All-Star level talents to join them as executive producers on the series including Rain Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Brad Pitt and his Plan B Entertainment production company and Game of Thrones producer Bernadette Caulfield.
