Game of Thrones David Benioff and DB Weiss sign exclusive deal with Netflix

David Benioff and DB Weiss, the creators of the HBO TV series Game of Thrones, signed an exclusive first look deal with Netflix.

Netflix has won the fight for the creators Game of Thrones! David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, according to a report from Deadline.

Benioff and Weiss agreed to a nine-figure deal with the streaming network, according to the report, and chose to sign the lucrative deal with Netflix over Disney, Amazon and four other studios.

Deadline is reporting the deal will give Netflix the first look at the shows and movies the pair develop, produce, write and direct, which is similar in many ways to the deals signed by Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.

This is a huge deal for Netflix. The Game of Thrones showrunners and executive producers were two of the most coveted writers and creators in Hollywood. The fact that Netflix was able to lock in a deal with them is an incredibly important step for the future of the streaming network.

Netflix is going to lose the streaming rights to a lot of established shows in the next few years, including Friends, The Office, and many more. To offset those losses, the streaming network need to continue making compelling content, and that’s one thing Benioff and Weiss know a thing or about. Game of Thrones is one of the biggest shows of all time, obviously.

This deal comes at a weird time for Benioff and Weiss. If this deal was announced a few years ago, I think people would be talking about how big of a steal this is for Netflix.

Now, after all the criticism from the final season of Game of Thrones, it doesn’t feel like Benioff and Weiss are as popular right now as they were. Netflix doesn’t care about that, though, and I don’t think many fans will once they start making their shows and movies.

The pair is also working on stories for the upcoming Star Wars trilogy, according to the report.

It will be really interesting to see what Benioff and Weiss come up with at Netflix. Deadline is reporting they are expected to take another crack at a big series, and I think that’s probably the game plan here for the streaming network. You don’t bring in these two unless you are going to go for a major adaptation and/or world-building of some kind. Could it be The Chronicles of Narnia?

Netflix has already tapped Matthew Aldrich to lead the adaptation into the future. It would be foolish to have Benioff and Weiss in-house and not get their ideas on world-building. They are responsible for bringing an ambitious fantasy book series to life on TV and building that world. Hopefully, they could share some ideas and inspiration.

I’m happy Netflix was able to make this deal happen, and I think most Netflix subscribers will feel that way, as well. Regardless of the criticism, the pair developed, probably, the biggest show in TV history, and that experience will likely have a positive impact on their upcoming projects.
