5 big moments from Lovecraft Country episode 2, “Whiteys on the Moon”

Out of all the significant moments that occurred during the second episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, these five stand out the most.

The second episode of Lovecraft Country picks up right after the last haunting ordeal ended. This next iteration was chock full of game-changing revelations and really starts to explore the fantastical world the show exists in.

While the first installment of the TV series was light on the Lovecraftian horror, the second installment titled “Whiteys on the Moon” goes full-throttle on the supernatural, ancient orders, wizardry, forcefields, and fact that Tic’s birthright may, in fact, be a terrible nightmare.

From the shocking death to the brilliant visuals, here are five of the biggest and wildest moments that set the tone for what promises to be a chillingly effective first season.

1. Ancient orders and Ancestral revelations

Of the many revelations littered throughout the episode, one big one by Uncle George happens randomly in the woods when he remembers something Tic’s mother told him about an ancestor of theirs by the name of Hanna. The establishment where they are staying is actually a replica of the original that had burned down, and Hanna was the only one to survive.

The previous owner was very friendly with his slaves, and the baby was his child, meaning Atticus is the last remaining heir to this strange cult called the Order of Ancient Dawn, which George later finds out about after traversing through a secret passageway in his room. This secret society is made up of rich and powerful men that are obsessed with immortality and bringing back the Garden of Eden. This isn’t an easy ordeal, and getting the spell wrong can result in destruction, hence what happened to the original establishment.

2. Guard Dog reveal

As the trio walks back through the woods, they are attacked by the same creatures that they encountered in the first episode.

They emerge from the ground surrounding Tic, George, and Letitia before Christine Braithwhite arrives on horseback to save the day with a magic whistle.

We also learn that a spell erases the memory of anyone lucky enough to survive these monsters, which is why Letitia and George weren’t traumatized from the nightmarish affair in the beginning of the second iteration. We also see Christina help a cow give birth to one of these bizarre beasts she refers to as guard dogs, making viewers wonder and speculate aimlessly on these mysterious beasts.

3. Battling inner demons

Magic becomes the name of the game in Lovecraft Country’s second installment as a forcefield powered by strange markings traps Tic, George, and Letitia in their rooms.

The patrons of the dinner in the lodge watch through magical flatscreen-esque portals as the three battle literal inner demons to break the unsuspecting guests for the pleasure of these superstitious bigots.

Tic fights a female Asian soldier, which is most likely the woman we heard on the phone in episode one and another manifestation of the person similar to the red princess from the opening or the premiere. Letitia gets attacked by a snake in a fake Atticus’s pants, and George talks to a long lost love.

Things get worse when the group tries to escape, and a forcefield causes the car to smash, which explains how Christina took out the mob of racists chasing the trio in the first chapter. Ladies and gentlemen magic has officially arrived in Lovecraft Country.

4. The gateway to paradise

The Order of Ancient Dawn wants to find eternal life more than anything, but the spell is rather difficult to work out. Samuel Braithrite plans to open the gateway to the Garden of Eden, and when he steps into it, he believes he will be immortal.

The only way to do this is to utilize the power from the founder of the group Titus Braithwhite, and since he’s dead, his only living heir Atticus will have to do. During the ceremony, Tic’s lifeforce is painfully sucked out of him to open the gate, but his ancestor Hanna helps him turn the tables, killing the other members and causing the grand manor collapsing on itself with Atticus narrowly escaping. This could have awakened a power in Atticus that will be fascinating to explore in later episodes.

5. Gaining a father, losing an uncle

In the end, Montrose Freeman, Atticus’s father, who they were looking for, is reunited with his family only to have Uncle George die from a gunshot wound during their thrilling escape. Atticus is obviously devastated by this unfortunate turn of events, and it will be interesting to see how this loss affects the relationship between him and his estranged father.

There was no shortage of jaw-dropping surprises that occurred in the is an epic ordeal which only heightens the anticipation for what else is set to go down in the rest of the riveting season of HBO’s Lovecraft Country.
